Shipping Container Sizes & Availability


The most common two sizes of shipping containers sold in North America are 20 foot and 40 foot units. The measurement is the length of the unit. All containers transported by cargo ship need to be fixed width of 8 feet. The only exception is 53ft containers, which are made to rail standards. 53ft containers are 8ft 6in wide.

Coastal depots such as Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, New York and Chicago are typically well stocked will all grades, sizes and configurations of shipping containers. Inland depots such as Denver, Kansas City, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City have less availability, with only the more common sizes and grades in stock.

What is the difference between a Standard Shipping Container and a High Cube Shipping Container?

Standard containers are 8ft 6in tall / High Cube are 9ft 6in tall. Conex Depot stock both sizes. The best seller in 40ft containers is the High Cube (HC) variation. Generally customers only buy standard (STD) containers if they have height restrictions at the delivery site.
