Shipping container businesses help solve downtown Cleveland’s retail problem Once serviced by eight large department stores, the lower Euclid Avenue area have over time deteriorated to a depressed area of parking lots and vacant buildings. Cleveland’s historic Warehouse District has struggled during the downturn and developers looked to revitalize the area and fill the vacant industrial warehouse spaces with hip new restaurants and entertainment venues. Starting with three used cargo containers the developers, modified the steel Conex boxes by removing one of the walls and creating small shop storefronts with street access. Each Conex box houses a small business. Two boutique clothing stores – the Banyan Box and The Wandering Wardrobe and a retail shop featuring sports paraphernalia for the NFL’s Cleveland Browns. Other tenants operating out of the Repurposed Shipping Container businesses are a nail salon, kids-only hair shop, a candy shop, a restaurant, screen-printing shop, and an optician and eyewear store. Reportedly there is a waiting list with more than 40 businesses looking for a slot.

Shipping container home developments, Shipping container apartments and Tiny homes in Cleveland

Turning shipping containers into homes in Cleveland. One local shipping container home builder Derrick Childs, thinks that renovated used shipping containers might be the answer to making home ownership more affordable for people who lack the income for the traditional type of homes. The small 320-square foot home is made out of a 40-foot long shipping container renovated offsite and then transported to the vacant lot where the home will finally reside. Each tiny home is equipped with a kitchen, a bathroom, a living room, and a bedroom. The water supply, sewage pipes and electrical wiring are then installed as they would in a traditional home build. There has been a plan to raffle off three renovated cargo container homes to be placed in some of Cleveland’s most depressed neighborhoods. The vision is to revitalize urban neighborhoods quickly with affordable container living spaces that are secure, energy-efficient and sustainable.
