Starland District shipping container restaurant in Savannah. Starland Yard is Savannah’s first food truck park at the corner of De Soto Avenue and 40th Street. The area around Bull Street between Victory and 37th and along De Soto Avenue between 40th and 41st Street has seen a fair amount of new development in the last few years and Starland Yard is a part of that revitalization. The food and beverage concept is unique in that it is built around nearly three dozen repurposed cargo containers. Starland Yard features a pizza restaurant called Vittoria Pizzeria, outdoor tables, a fully stocked bar, a performance stage for music and a bocce court.

Guy Davidson, one of the developers behind Starland Yard, explains the concept behind the Conex container restaurant project “Our primary goal has always been to create a neighborhood spot where people congregate around food and drink. From a design perspective, we wanted to use shipping containers from both a sustainability and recycling standpoint, and also as an homage to the Port of Savannah.” As Savannah is the location of one of the biggest container shipping ports in the country, the developers looked to incorporate some of those plentiful unused sea containers in the design of Starland Yard. Over 30 Conex containers are part of the design. The center piece of Starland Yard is the pizzeria which is housed in six of the steel boxes. The remaining containers are being used for the full-service bar and other food vendors. Starland Yard is located at 2411 DeSoto Ave, Savannah.

Shipping container home developments, Shipping container apartments and tiny homes in Savannah

The Savannah Project – shipping container home in Savannah, Georgia. Julio Garcia, a Savannah based artist from Price Street Projects, is behind one of the city’s first sea container houses. Named “The Savannah Project,” the cargo container home build is constructed out of two 40 foot steel containers (obtained from someone who worked at the port) that are placed 6 feet apart and connected together by a wood-framed floor and shed roof. The boxes’ sidewalls were then cut away to open a larger living space. Measuring 970 square-feet the compact space includes a bedroom, bathroom, open kitchen, and living room space. The designer purposely left the outside of the container as it was, as part of the design look. But inside you can find all of the comforts of home. Shipping container homes are known to be energy efficient and recycling the unused Conex box is also part of the philosophy of being environmentally friendly. Garcia took things one step further with the Savannah Project by using salvaged building materials that were rescued from the trash. The drywall for the interior walls was picked up for no cost from a nearby construction site. “We approached some contractors, knowing that there’s a lot of waste in projects, and found a sympathetic guy. It was insane that we were able to obtain 100 sheets of drywall that they were just going to throw away.” says Garcia. Garcia explains that one of the biggest challenges of the Savannah Project was getting the steel containers to the site without damaging the surrounding landscape. Intermodal containers are designed to be transportable and so can be lifted onto a truck and relocated to the lot they will eventually reside.
