Located a block west of the MacArthur BART station, MacArthur Annex is a shipping container project of 33 repurposed cargo containers transformed into retail spaces. The spaces are home to an array of diverse, independent tenants like a vintage record shop, an apothecary selling a line of handmade and organic products, office spaces, and artist work studios. There is also a restaurant and beer garden to grab a bite after you get your tarot cards read at another of the stalls. The concept behind MacArthur Annex is a mixed space with modest rents (starting around $850/month) and easy access to the BART station which would appeal to the eclectic business owners looking for an affordable space for their small shops. The Conex containers are stacked three stories high and connected together to form the whole of the complex. Designed to be sustainable, the MacArthur Annex is solar-powered and made from “upcycled” sea containers that would otherwise have been reduced to scrap metal. Check it out at 644 40th St Oakland on the corner of 40th and Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Shipping container home developments, Shipping container apartments and tiny homes in Oakland

Oakland startup Boxouse coverts shipping containers into tiny living spaces Boxouse is the brainchild of young entrepreneur Luke Iseman. Iseman’s Oakland based startup Boxouse is all about renovating those big, steel Conex containers into compact homes for rent or sale. The business model originally was to sell the completed Boxouse homes, but there are other possibilities as well, such as listing the tiny homes on Airbnb or as leased / rental living spaces. The converted Conex boxes are offered in two models. The standard model which is a fully renovated home with the amenities of bathroom, bedroom and kitchen at a $29,000 price tag. The Boxouse tiny homes measure a compact 160 square feet — jadequate space to fit a full-size bed, a small dining table and chair, small kitchen appliances, kitchen sink, with a bathroom. Each box house has a front door with a single window, and come insulated with polyurethane foam, underneath the interior plywood wall and the surrounding metal shell

The most basic, bare bones model is a modest $8,000 for a bare-bones model all the way to the “Deluxe” version. $50,000 gets you a model with all of the options: solar power unit that is capable of powering the entire unit and the kitchen, utomatic utility service, water and septic tank. And interrestingly, futuristic smart windows and lights controlled by voice via Amazons “Alexa”-system. The biggest obstacles to the growth of the Boxouse model are: where are the residents allowed to setup the homes, and whether city officials will grant approval for the new format of living space. The ultimate vision for Boxouse? Iseman imagines an Oakland in which abandoned lots are populated with shipping container homes, helping to solve homeless problem and revitalize Oakland neighborhoods.
