The Box Spot: a cool New Orleans shipping container restaurant. The Box Spot restaurant at 1700 N. Claiborne Ave. is housed in a couple of converted Conex boxes. Normally used to carry bulk goods aboard ocean going cargo ships and trains, creative developers are looking for ways to “upcycle” old containers into something fun and useful. Owner Gina Duncan says that repurposing containers into a sea container restaurant was her husband’s idea. Former restaurateurs looking for a new casual dining concept, the Duncans previously operated J’s Seafood Dock oyster bar and restaurant in the French Market. The Box Spot is actually divided into 2 separate food vending spaces. Side #1 is the “Fresh Side” that serves up healthy fresh salads and wraps. The other space is called the “Wing Side,” specializing in chicken wings dressed in different types of sauces. Gina decorated the restaurants herself, using recycled pallets, pipes and wood to fabricate most of the seats and interior signage. Between the 2 Conex boxes is a wooden deck with outdoor seating tables and a fresh herb garden. “The concept behind this was to bring something fresh and new to the community,” co-owner Justin Duncan explained. “Liven up the neighborhood and have something nice for everyone to come and enjoy.” The Box Spot is located near the Claiborne exit ramp where it exits off of highway I-10. If The Box Spot fares well, the Duncans have plans for other container restaurants in other New Orleans neighborhoods down the road.
The New Orleans Home and Garden Show exhibited other shipping container projects. Featured were a Container Village display where old Conex containers of different sizes retrofitted for different uses will be on display. Creative local designers have put together prototypes of a child’s playhouse, doghouses, a tiny guesthouse and even a steel sea container disguised and painted in camouflage as a hunting or fishing cabin.

KAN House – a shipping container home build in New Orleans. A local married couple – the Kalozdi’s – Kicker and his wife Anne Kalozdi were looking for a new home that satisfied a number of criteria. “I wanted a house that had the floor plan I wanted, one that I could work from.” and as importantly a house that would be safe in the event of one of the Gulf Coast’s fierce hurricanes. “I wanted a house that I didn’t want to have to worry about the siding being ripped off because of high winds. Something that was going to be a little bit more sturdy,” explained Kicker.
At home in the Irish Channel neighborhood, the KAN House is one of New Orlean’s first shipping container housing projects. The house is assembled out of seven gray cargo containers put together to create the complete home. Measuring eight feet wide and 40 feet long, there are two containers placed side by side with another two behind those to form the 16-foot wide ground floor. Another three containers stack on top to make the second floor for their home office, with even a room on a 3rd floor.
